Sarah Newberry, MSSW, LCSWA
License number: P015676
I received a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Sociology from Tennessee Tech University with concentrations in Criminal Justice and Social Work and Minor in Spanish before entering graduate school attaining a Master’s of Science degree in Social Work from the University of Tennessee. I received the Trauma Treatment Certification through the University of Tennessee as a graduate student. As a clinician, constant education and training are required to maintain competency on new research methods and treatment interventions. I am currently receiving training consultation for TF-CBT and I have been trained through the Incredible Years Program for Parent Class Facilitation and training in EMDR.
My career started in the field of victim advocacy working with victims of domestic and sexual violence for three years while an undergraduate. I then began working as an intern therapist in the in-patient and outpatient hospital setting for a year and a half through graduate practicum as well as working within a Crisis Stabilization Unit for two years before relocating to North Carolina with my family in 2020 amidst the pandemic. I joined the SEL Group as part of the Behavioral Health Response Team at that time before joining the group as an outpatient therapist with associate level licensure in the social work field.
I decided to pursue counseling to promote growth and share insight with others by focusing on treating a variety of issues such as anxiety, depression, grief and loss, everyday life stress, and both adult and childhood trauma. I prefer to utilize a variety of theoretical approaches such as Gestalt and Rogerian theories to recognize the person in their environment and patterns of behavior to understand where each individual originates from childhood through adolescence to adulthood. I prefer to meet every family, child, and adult where they are in the moment to encourage the understanding of being present in the here-and-now to overcome challenges. I also utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Mindfulness practice to build self-care, reframe negative self-talk, and understand the process of growth through the transtheoretical model of change.
When I am not working, I am usually spending time with my family chasing after a four year old and our dog. I love to read mostly children’s books at this time, but my favorite authors include Jodi Picoult and John Steinbeck and childhood favorite, Sarah Dessen. I love watching classic films and television shows as well as taking long walks and enjoying a cup of coffee or tea outdoors.
