Seeking support is an important step. We strive to make that step feel welcoming and respectful. Whether you are facing stress, emotional challenges, relationship concerns, or a season of change, our goal is to listen without judgment and work collaboratively toward your personal goals.
We believe that every person has a unique story. Care should honor your experiences, strengths, and priorities.
Our beginnings · Est. 2008
It all began with a simple thought: “Maybe one day…”
While pursuing her Master of Science in Counseling at North Carolina A&T State University, Dr. Nannette Funderburk imagined that perhaps one day she might open a private counseling practice. At the time, that dream felt distant. Like many graduate students, her immediate priority was finding meaningful work in her field.
Yet the idea remained with her. After graduating from North Carolina A&T, she pursued doctoral studies at North Carolina State University, where she developed a deep interest in emotional intelligence and its relevance to everyday life. Her research in social and emotional learning—including the development of an assessment tool to measure emotional intelligence—helped that early dream begin to take shape.
Meanwhile, Minister Keith Funderburk was building his own foundation in leadership and service. After earning a Bachelor of Science in Political Science with a minor in Business from UNC Greensboro, he became a corporate trainer for a major bank in Charlotte, North Carolina. There, he trained hundreds of employees and worked with senior leadership through a diversity leadership initiative. His professional experience in training, organizational leadership, and community engagement, together with years of hands-on ministry, prepared him to help build an organization centered on serving others.
Together, the Funderburks shared a vision: to make a meaningful, lasting difference in their community. In 2008, they brought that vision to life by founding The Social and Emotional Learning Group—The S.E.L. Group.
Since then, the practice has grown, provided counseling to thousands of individuals, raised awareness about the importance of mental wellness, and developed relationships with community organizations to expand its impact. What began as a quiet “maybe one day” became a commitment to helping people navigate life's challenges and make practical, positive changes.
Our story is still being written. We are grateful for the opportunity to serve our community and honored that you have chosen to be part of our journey.
